Steal Guide: Zidane, Mug & Rare Items
Unlock Steal with Zidane, read failed and empty messages, improve attempts with Brigand’s Gloves, and target verified rare items without wasting turns.

Steal setup
Check the enemy. Improve the attempt. Then farm.

Use Libra first
Confirm that the enemy still has a normal or rare steal before spending turns.
Equip Brigand’s Gloves
The accessory increases Steal success and is listed at 4,000 gil in the airship accessory shop from chapter 5.
Use Zidane’s later tools
Treasure Hunter guarantees the rare item when Steal succeeds; Mug trades a pure attempt for damage plus a steal chance.
Three verified examples
Good reasons to use Steal
Rare steal; the database lists repeating field encounters.
Rare steal from the level-26 Wyvern entry.
Rare steal; the enemy is a random encounter, so a dry streak is possible.

Equip the Zidane Vision and learn Steal from his progression. Steal spends a turn attempting to take the item shown on an enemy’s information screen; Mug combines damage with a chance to steal. Use Libra before farming so you know whether the current enemy carries a normal item, a rare item or nothing.
Do not treat repeated failure as proof that the target is wrong. A failed attempt and an empty target produce different battle messages, explained in the visual setup above.
Does “nothing to steal” mean the chance failed?
No. “Failed to steal” means the attempt did not succeed and can be repeated. “Nothing to steal” means no stealable item remains on that target. The enemy may never have carried one, or the available item may already have been taken.
Each enemy can only yield its available steal once in that battle. After success, move to the next target rather than spending more turns on the same one.
What do Brigand’s Gloves and Treasure Hunter do?
Brigand’s Gloves increase the success rate of Steal. The reviewed shop database lists them for 4,000 gil at the airship accessory counter from chapter 5 onward. Zidane’s later Treasure Hunter ability guarantees that a successful Steal gives the rare item.
Those effects solve different problems: the gloves help the attempt succeed, while Treasure Hunter controls which item a successful attempt gives. This page does not publish an exact base success percentage because the site has not independently reproduced the underlying roll.
Is Mug better than Steal?
Mug is useful when you still want to deal damage during attempts. Plain Steal is safer when the enemy is fragile and you do not want to defeat it before obtaining the item. Check the timeline, the target’s remaining HP and your objective before choosing.
For a rare item, pair the attempt with the best available Zidane passives rather than assuming Mug alone guarantees it. A damage action and a guaranteed rare result are separate conditions.
Three verified rare-steal targets
The three examples above are cross-checked against individual enemy entries, not inferred from community comments alone. Monster Effigy is a random Water Shrine encounter; a long gap without seeing one is possible even though the enemy is correctly associated with that dungeon.
Use the Water Shrine route if you still need the story mechanism, or the Vision database for Zidane’s actual ability progression. The complete enemy-by-enemy list remains with the referenced database rather than being duplicated here without independent verification.
What should you do when farming feels slow?
- Confirm the correct enemy variant and location with Libra.
- Check that the item is still listed on the current target.
- Equip Brigand’s Gloves when available.
- Preserve the enemy if using a damaging Mug setup.
- Save outside the route and use repeatable encounters; do not plan around an unverified one-time target.
If the goal is EXP, MRP or gil rather than a unique item, use the farming guide. Steal farming and result-screen farming solve different resource problems.
